Why Some Boys Read Less

The statistics are sobering. Boys consistently read less than girls. By middle and high school, they are far more likely to say they never read for fun. That gap matters because reading builds vocabulary, focus, imagination, and the resilience kids need to thrive.

One big reason is that boys do not always see themselves in the stories available to them. They crave adventure, risk, and real-life heroes who show them that even the biggest dreams are worth chasing.

That is why I wrote Where We Land: A Boy, a Plane, and a Dream — a fully illustrated children’s book based on the true story of my brother.

He was an unlikely dreamer, a poor kid from small-town Nebraska with nothing but determination and a head full of sky.

Airplanes felt impossibly out of reach until the day he stumbled into a machine shed and found himself face to face with a bright yellow plane. That moment set him on a path of sweat, sacrifice, and persistence that turned expensive dreams into reality.

This book is more than a story. It is proof for every child who feels too small or too ordinary that hard work and courage can take them higher than they ever imagined.

Dream big. Work hard. Take flight.

If you are looking for a story that will inspire your child, especially a reluctant boy reader who needs to believe that his dreams are worth it, this is that book.

Great for bedtime. Gift time. Or Anytime.
